The Hair Chart

This chart can help you determine your hair type. There are four types. Each type has subtypes.

I have type 4B hair and generally the hardest to manage. It is frizzy when not chemically straightened or flattened with a hot brush or flat iron. When people with this hair type use chemicals to tame our hair it causes a lot of damage. Thereby, it negatively affects our natural hair texture. I have stayed away from chemically straightening my hair, but I still use heat to straighten it. I need something that restores the damage from heat, and these Natural Hair Care Tools help with this. Now let’s talk about the other hair types.

Hair Type 1 – A, B and C (Straight or Slightly Wavy)

type 1 hair, women with straight hair

Type 1 hair is mostly straight or slightly wavy hair. There are three textures to type 1 hair.

  • Type 1A hair is very thin and straight. There is no bend, bounce or wave. People with this hair generally perm their hair to give it texture.
  • Type 1B hair is a little thicker and has a little wave to it. This gives it a little bounce and is easier to curl without chemicals.
  • Type 1C hair has a combination of straight hair with more waves and maybe even a bit of a curl. Sometimes the humidity can affect this hair and make it more wavy than straight.

Type 2 Hair: A, B and C – (Wavy)

Type 2 hair has a wavy texture. The amount of waves can vary as well as how tight the curves of the waves are. There are various textures that can be found with type 2 hair and it has to do with the degree of waves that the hair has. Wavy hair can be affected by the environment such as if there is high humidity in the air.

  • Type 2A hair consists of loose waves that is straight at the crown. It is similar to 1C hair, but is thicker.
  • Type 2B hair is also straight at the crown with the wave starting close to the head. The waves are tighter than type 2A, but they don’t form curls. This type can frizz in humidity.
  • Type 2C hair has fairly tight waves from the crown to the tip. This type can have a thicker or even coarse texture that is prone to frizzing.

Type 3 Hair – A, B, and C (Curly)

Type 3 hair types have voluminous curls. It just matters how tight those curls are and how thick to determine the subtype.

  • Type 3A curls are large spirals. These are fun springy curls that look like Shirley Temple’s curls.
  • Type 3B curls are tighter curls that range from ringlets to corkscrews. This subtype tends to be a little thicker and coarser and can frizz in humidity.
  • Type 3C curls are the tight coily type. This hair naturally is very full, and definitely frizzes when wet. This type of hair has a great deal of volume and is generally coarse.

Type 4 Hair – A, B, and C (Kinky)

Unfortunately, this is my hair type. Most people with a black ethnic background fall into this category. We generally use chemicals and heated devices to control the kinkiness of our hair, and it can be a nightmare. However, with these products, this type of hair can be more manageable naturally. In the meantime, let’s explore this Type 4 hair.

type 4 hair, women with kinky hair.
  • Type 4A hair has extremely tight S-shaped kinks. The coils are springy to wiry. It is thinner and softer than the other two subtypes. As with all subtypes in this group this hair will frizz in humidity and when wet.
  • Type 4B hair has more of a Z-shaped kink. This hair is also thicker and more coarse than 4A hair.
  • Type 4C hair is very dense, thick and coarse with very tight small curls.
